Every year, nearly 3mln visitors travel from around the world to experience the wonder of the mountain carving. Between Oct.4,1927 and Oct.31,1941, Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers sculpted the colossal faces of US presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosvelt and Abraham Lincoln to represent the first 150 years of the great experiment in democracy – America.
Visit the newly renovated Sculptor’s Studio (Borglum’s working place) and see the 1/12 scale model of Mount Rushmore. During summer season, rangers give 15-minute talks in the studio and then you can discover that the sculpture on Rushmore Mountain is not actually finished (originally it was planned to carve the chests as well, but WWII took all the money away from the project and only faces were done).
To get the closest viewpoints of the faces, you should walk the 0,6-mile Presidential Trail.
