South Carolina (and NC as well), is one of the first original 13 states (colonies) of America. This is also where black slaves from Africa were brought for labor. This state was full of rice, tobacco and cotton plantations, some of which survived to modern times. Most of them got transferred into parks, golf fields, resorts, but some are still historical landmarks and are open to public. If you want to experience the atmosphere of “North and South” or “Gone with the wind” movies, you must go and see one of these plantations. We chose the Hopsewee plantation, right by Georgetown. This one has a special meaning for American history since this is the place where one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was born and lived for several years – Thomas Lynch Jr.
