Heading for Northern MN, you may reach Park Rapids and …. the oldest park in Minnesota – the Itasca State Park. Why it is so famous? Because the almighty Mississippi river has its headwaters right there. It starts its winding journey 2,552 miles up to the Gulf of Mexico.
Park is huge and has many entrances. Nothing surprising if it includes more than 100 lakes.
At the source, you can find a big, wooden sign, with all needed information. It’s funny, but this mighty, historic river, looks like a small creek, which you can wander in and reach both banks in just a few seconds’ time.
